About Tafari

Tafari Nia Lumumba is the principal of Tafari Law PLLC.  He has more than a decade of experience performing workplace investigations and defending companies in litigation.  He has experience investigating employees accused of minor policy breaches and those who allegedly violated federal laws. Tafari understands the importance of properly scoping the size of an investigation to ensure thoroughness without wasting a client’s valuable time and money.  Tafari has represented corporations in both civil and criminal litigation, defending his client’s interests before the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and private civil litigants.

Education and Bar Admissions.  Tafari received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2011.  He graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the Colorado College in 2005 with a B.A. in English literature.  While there, he studied abroad in Mexico and completed coursework in Spanish on Mexican history and culture.  After college, Tafari won a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to work and live in Guatemala and Brazil from 2005 to 2006.  Tafari is fluent in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.  He is admitted to practice law in Texas and Colorado. 

Workplace and Government Investigations Experience.  Among other engagements, Tafari has:

  • Performed an investigation in Brazilian Portuguese of alleged anti-trust violations by currency traders in Europe.
  • Investigated allegations of anti-trust violations by the sales unit of a Fortune 500 electronics distributor.
  • Performed more than 100 investigation interviews in Brazilian Portuguese in connection with the largest bribery investigation in Brazil’s history.
  • Performed internal investigations on behalf of a Fortune 500 technology company’s compliance hotline, investigating matters ranging from alleged policy violations to fraud.
  • Assisted a Brazilian oil and gas company in responding to document requests from the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.
  • Made presentations to the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with responding to government document requests.

Litigation Experience.  Tafari has represented clients in matters in federal and state courts involving commercial disputes, securities fraud allegations, and alleged theft of trade secrets.

Compliance Counseling Experience.  In addition to assisting companies with performing investigations, Tafari also counsels companies concerning the effectiveness and structure of their anti-corruption compliance programs.  Among other matters, Tafari’s experience includes:    

  • Performing anti-corruption due diligence interviews in Brazilian Portuguese for a multinational chemicals company.
  • Performing an anti-corruption risk assessment concerning the Brazilian subsidiary of a multinational electronics distributor.
  • Performing an anti-corruption risk assessment for a global medical technology company.
  • Providing live search warrant and Dawn Raid response training to the global offices of a Fortune 500 company.
